I really enjoy our local restaurant, Riviera Wine and Bistro Bar.  I especially enjoy their Martini Salad and the Dover Sole.  After spending another thoroughly enjoyable evening there with my friends last Wednesday, I thought I’d remind everyone of the wonderful food and atmosphere that’s just around the corner.

Surround yourself with Casual Elegance in this neighborhood restaurant here in Calabasas. Upon entering the beautiful lounge filled with Italian leather couches and Barcellona chairs, you will be seduced by the relaxed and warm atmosphere. Riviera’s full bar also features thirty wines by the glass, along with a friendly bar menu for the casual diner. The service is warm and friendly with polished old world charm. Also, our versatile dining room offers semi-private and private rooms for any occasion. Furthermore, talented Chef Maurizio Ronzoni from Lake Como is able to turn local seasonal ingredients in mouth-watering dishes ranging from classic appetizers, house made fresh pastas, steakhouse quality prime meals, and the freshest seafood rivaling the best sushi bars in the area.

Buon Apetitio!!

By: Mary Panehaiti

Two months to the day since the catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti (3/12/2010) – Salvation Army volunteers from all parts of the Southland will gather in Bell, CA to participate in a two-day, 24-hour humanitarian mission for the earthquake-ravaged island nation of Haiti.

Through a partnership with Numana, Inc. – a nonprofit dedicated to relieving global hunger – this army of volunteers will roll up their sleeves and form a massive assembly line as they pack 1 million meals. In the first event of its kind in the West, these 1 million nutritious food packages will be assembled in 24 hours for shipment to Haiti. Donations of food and water have proved a lifeline to the 1.2 million displaced by the quake and The Salvation Army will continue to assist throughout this ongoing crisis.

Recruit a team of 12 people and register to serve. Be sure to indicate that you’re interested in the ‘Million Meals for Haiti’ project on the volunteer sign-up form, and let us know the names of the folks you’ve recruited to your team. We also need to know which shift you’d like to sign up for. If you want to speak to someone about signing up, please call 213-607-7314. And, if you are unable to recruit a team of 12, don’t panic … we’ll fit you in with another team or give you a job anyway! WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Facts about the city of Calabasas

The City of Calabasas has a fun history

What is now the “Sagebrush Cantina” was originally a group of small stores built in the early 1920′s.  The parking lot was once a local jail.  Outside was the famous hanging tree, dead, but still standing today.

Lack of water in the Calabasas area was always a major concern. When the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District was founded in 1958, was water supply was assured and the area began its development boom.

The first subdivision in Calabasas was called Park Moderne and was built in 1928.  It was located in what is now Mulwood near Calabasas High School.  It was a retreat for artists, craftsmen and writers.

The first Calabasas high school was built in 1880 on the south side on Calabasas Road.  A second school, built on the same site in 1924-1925, was a one-teacher school for the area until 1948, when it joined with Liberty, Cornell, and Las Virgenes to form the Las Virgenes Unified School District

Jordan Coleman of the Coyotes dazzled with a load of baskets including layups, a dribble drive floater, a fade away and powerful dunk. But the leading Coyotes soon faltered as Harvard-Westlake ditched the full court press and fed the ball to their big man, Erik Swoope. Swoope overcame the double digit deficit to triumph over the Coyotes with a 83-68 victory.

“It’s disappointing to lose, but we fought hard,” Coleman explained. “We wanted to go far in the playoffs and we did.”

Coleman, who will attend the University of Hawaii next year, scored 22 of his 27 points in the first half as they stomped St. John Bosco and Tustin.

With the help of the fan base who they call “The Pack,” the Coyotes had a strong year and should be proud in this years efforts.

Vitamin D and Green Tea may Prevent Cancer

Too much of a good thing?green-tea

The next frontier of cancer research appears to be the study of nutrients and vitamins for cancer prevention, says a researcher at the University of Wisconsin. According to the Cardone Cancer Center, green tea and a nutrient in broccoli seem to hold the potential for preventing cancer. Additionally, Vitamin D, which can be found in dairy products and sunlight, is also being studied by Dr. Howard Bailey, profesor of medicine at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

Although few nutrients are proven to prevent cancer, a group of drugs have shown positive results. Tamoxifen, developed to treat breast cancer, and raloxifene, first used to prevent osteoporosis, can reduce breast cancer in high-risk women. Another FDA-approved cancer-prevention drug is the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer.

According to Bailey, research on drugs is making notable progress where the advantages of nutrients lags. The problem lies in determining the level of nutrients needed to create a measurable prevention of specific cancers. Bailey explained that this will be where researchers must focus their efforts in the future.

Real Estate Fraud Alert

A warning from REFAT to those searching for real estate

By: Jeff Biebuyck

Share/Bookmark

A fraud issue has come to the top of news headlines; much of the problem revolves around Craigslist and other community posting sites. Many times the post contains an urgent statement that sounds credible (i.e. last minute job relocation, death in the family). The post urges them to wire money to a specified address or account and the lease will be signed later. Clearly, this should be a red flag but many have fallen victim to this scam.

Homeowners should contact the website hosting information and contact police.

Save Gas Burn Fat

By: Kyle Gulock

Who doesn’t want to save gas and burn fat in the process? A friend of mine, Vinnie Tortorich, has created a website where people can go to learn about how to save gas and burn fat in the process, www.savegasburnfat.com. Vinnie been a personal trainer for over 27 years in Los Angeles County, and has been an ultra cyclist since the early 90′s.

Savegasburnfat is a website that is dedicated to helping people lose weight, save money, and go green in the process. In 1983 Vinnie played football at Tulane and weighed 250 pounds, which is good size for a linebacker. After Vinnie’s football career was over, he ballooned up to 270 pounds. At this point, Vinnie had decided that enough was enough and health became Vinnie’s number one concern. Vinnie’s new diet consisted of him eating half of what he did before and ridding his bike everywhere. After this simple diet was put into place, Vinnie was able to drop his weight from 270 to 180 in around a year’s time.

Currently, Vinnie rides his bike an average of 13,000 miles a year and has even been recorded riding 17,000 miles one year. There aren’t any miracle drugs involved, but just pure hard work. For more information on Vinnie’s story, how to save gas and burn fat, click on the link below: www.savegasburnfat.com.
