I met Coach Lizzie Brenkus while I was training for the Arizona Ironman in 2009. She too was training for Arizona Ironman and we met online and then started spending time together.  I talked her into running our local Calabasas Classic 10K in 2009 and she went on to WIN IT. She is smoking fast. She also just completed the Kona Ironman World Championship in October with a time of 11:45:08. She is an amazing athlete. She is now the run ambassador of Lululemon. The Run Club meets Monday nights at 6pm and all levels are welcome. We do long runs, interval training, core strength work, raining, etc. There are also guest speakers at least once a month covering topics such as nutrition, massage, yoga, coaching etc.

It’s a fantastic group of people and it really helps to rub elbows with like-minded individuals and keep the training fresh. Ironman training can be very lonely at times. Lots of solo hours spent running and biking and swimming. It’s motivating and educational.

FYI, I just signed up for Arizona Ironman 2011 this morning. This club will be pivotal in my training.

Sean Wika was riding his bike on Parkway Calabasas around 9:15 pm on September 15 when he saw a car coming at him with a broken front wheel. Noticing the car was heading straight for him, he jumped off his bike and rolled off the side. The car passed him and he watched as the wheel came off the car and the driver continued to drive with sparks flying for nearly 100 feet.

As the car finally slowed to a stop, the driver got out to inspect the damage, Sean approached and noticed the driver was likely drunk. Sean yelled at the man to stop driving but he wouldn’t. Sean was forced to shut the engine off through the open window. He then pulled the driver out of the car. Sean called the police and soon the driver was taken into custody.

I’d like to thank Sean as well. He has a wonderful family and this is a testament to how well they’ve raised Sean. The chamber of Calabasas and Lost HIlls Sheriff’s station is thanking Sean Wika for his fast thinking and prevention.

Calabasas Classic Results

A great Calabasas event

Yesterday, Sunday, November 14th was the 7th Calabasas Classic 5K/ 10K Run. All proceeds go to The Talbert Family Foundation which primarily supports local families in need of financial assistance due to catastrophic illness—mainly cancer.

Perfect weather led this event with over 2500 people registered – Calabasas is getting in shape.  I love these local events; besides the runners, the community came out to cheer on and lend support to all the activities.

A few from Sotheby’s in Calabasas ran including Tammy Sue Roberts, Billy Tipp (Steve’s Son) who came in 9th place, breaking into the Top 10 for the 5K. The founder/Broker Owner of our company, Roger Ewing placed 3rd in his age group and I ran as well.

This was my first 10K and I made my goal which was just over an hour. Next time I hope to drop off at least 6 minutes and run the entire distance. Let me know if you ran and how you did.

To see the results of the event check the website at: www.CalabasasClassic.com and search for the November 14, run 5k or 10K.

See you at the next race…

Maddy's Market in Calabasas

Maddy’s is officially open! With a goal to provide “natural, organic, and whole foods without artificial ingredients, additives and preservatives, hydrogenated oils and trans-fats, growth hormones, GMOs and irradiation,” Calabasas residents should be happy to shop at the new Calabasas grocery store. They offer special items such as wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, low-fat or low-carbohydrate, macrobiotic, vegetarian, vegan, kosher, raw, and the Body Ecology Diet.

The name Maddy’s is a tribute to the previous owners of the land that Maddy’s is built upon. Annalisa and Leo Maddy owned the piece of land almost a hundred years ago. Maddy allegedly built the house in 1912. Constructed on 5.3 acres of rolling hillside, Leo died in the 1971 Sylmar earthquake.

As apart of the grand opening, Maddy’s is hosting 2 speakers that will discuss health topics. Donna Gates speaks on Dec 4th at 2pm and Ken Babal talks the next week on December 12th at 1 pm.

Say farewell to Fins and hello to the modestly priced Toureffile. Whether you believe the name to be clever or a bit obvious, the distinctly French food seems to be receiving high marks. They sell the classics from Salmon Tartare, Escargots, Black Cod and Oyster Champagne Sabayon while offering a few different tasting menu options. Chef Thibaut Decosse and pastry chef Remi Juanchich team up to feature fine French options right in our Calabasas and Hidden Hills backyard. It’s certainly one of the finer dining options we have in the area. Stop by for a taste on 23504 Calabasas Rd, Calabasas.

The brand new shopping center already has Jersey Mikes. Also, coming soon is Maddy’s Markets (opening November  and the Wolfcreek Restaurant & Brewing Company (end of 2010). And speaking of Jersey Mike’s, it also just opened a new location in Woodland Hills.

Calabasas Fins out of business?

By: Kenny Melcombe

After years of serving fabulous seafood and offering lively atmosphere, the Calabasas Fins restaurant is closing. I haven’t heard all the details or reasons for the closing, but they seem undoubtedly related to the recession. It’s a shame to see one of our local spots go down.
