I caught up with Bethany Nelson, CEO of Sovage Denim, and Janet Heller of Isabella Emporium. Both products are exclusively made in the U.S. and will be available at Magnolia shortly. If you are interested in either product you can email Bethany or Janet Heller.

Many of us are familiar with the annual Denim and Diamonds event hosted by Nancy Alspaugh-Jackson in Hidden Hills. Nancy was also a key role in putting together this years charity event.

2011 Save Our Schools Fundraising Campaign

By: Dana Olmes

Share/Bookmark

A $10 million cut to annual funding has left Las Virgenes school teachers without jobs. As a district that continually posts the highest Academic Achievement in the state with over 90% of student going to college, it is imperative that we donate to this cause. With the help of parents and staff volunteers, the LVUSD has united to raise $330,202 as of May 5th. Although it may sound like a substantial amount of money, the district needs at least $1 million to protect the educational programs and teachers that we’ve come to rely on.

Please help the LVUSD by making a tax-deductible donation to the Save Our Schools Fund. If you would like to make a donation to the Save Our Schools Fund by check, click here. The completed form, along with a check made payable to LVUSD Save Our Schools, should be mailed to 4111 N. Las Virgenes Rd., Calabasas, CA  91302.

The story of a young man and his journey to the statesarturo sandoval

By: Dana Olmes

From a small town east of Havana, Cuba known as the country’s finest tobacco growing region, Arturo Sandoval knew he wanted to be a musician from a very young age. Forming a mini-circus act with a cat on a high wire while playing the congas, 6 year old Sandoval was on his way. When his village organized for local entertainment, he played a multitude of instruments. After deciding he didn’t like the trombone, bass drum and the flute because they made him dizzy, he began playing the trumpet.

Before long he was ask to join the Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music where Luis Escalante was the lead trumpet. As a 20 year old, Sandoval thought he’d made it. However, he was forced to serve his mandatory 3 year military service term cleaning barracks and building latrines. Following his service he found it troublesome to regain his previous job as first chair. Sandoval was lucky, however. Meeting Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz, he began to consider how to leave Cuba. In 1990, Arturo was scheduled to tour with the UN orchestra. Arturo became a citizen in 1999 and lives in Hidden Hills with his family but states he will always be a Cuban.

Voice Lessons in Hidden Hills

The charming Carolyn Val-Schmidt’s is an extraordinary soprano

By: Dana Olmes

Share/Bookmark

A piping soprano, social lite and voice coach, Carolyn Val-Schmidt assertively introduces herself as a “thespian.” I met Val-Schmidt by coincidence in the back quarters of our office – she overheard Erica Fields blurting her usual obscenities in the form of a song. Val-Schmidt, who maintains an astute musicians ear, immediately followed the resounding notes of the young Fields. To Val-Schmidt, Fields had the voice of a siren – a stunning enchantress with the ability to woo even the most lethargic of listeners.

“I heard your voice,” Val-Schmidt admitted. “Brilliant! You must have had training.”

“Well, a little,” said a flattered Fields. “I’ve dabbled.”

Val-Schmidt proceeded to explain her qualifications. A graduate from The Julliard School of Music and Director of Musical Theater & Opera Workshop at the Boulder Philharmonic Academy, Val-Schmidt recently moved to the California to continue teaching. She’s sung in 11 different languages and performed across the country but most of all she’s a conspicuous entertainer. Her captivating persona demands ample attention. She’s worth calling simply to hear her antics.

This video is called Happy Days are Here Again and is taken from her website:

Find your voice at: http://caroylnval-schmidt.com or on Facebook. Val-Schmidt will do private lessons in Hidden Hills, Calabasas, Woodland Hills, West Hills and most other local spots. Contact her at valvoice@yahoo.com.

The Gyroscope Double Horse

By: Dana Olmes

Share/Bookmark

This afternoon we had 2 spry gentleman enter our offices looking to make a sale. Although rather out of the ordinary, we welcomed Jordan Kirby and David Hernandez from Direct Marketing Services. They were selling helicopters. Remote control metal helicopters that perform 360 degree spins and move forward and backward. They have full police lights and charge through a USB. I admit, it was extremely hooky until I watched for a few minutes. Then I grew intrigued. People began to emerge from their offices at an alarming rate – we soon had a crowd of middle aged staffers standing around saying, “hey, that’s pretty cool.” Then Jordan hit the ceiling and the helicopter fell to the ground. Instead of showing a disturbed face, he seemed amused.

“These things are tough!” he shouted. “They are made of all metal so they basically don’t break.”

He continually crashed the copter just to make his point. We understood. It’s a good product. And kind of fun.
